Mount Vernon Music presents "Celebrating 200 Years of Schumann"on Saturday, November 27 at 7:30 p.m. in Mount Vernon Music Hall

Anita Williams - Monday, November 22, 2010

After the bounty of Thanksgiving, come to Mount Vernon Music Hall for a feast of gorgeous music by Robert and Clara Schumann Saturday evening, November 27 at 7:30 pm.

A great hero in the legacy of Romantic music, Robert Schumann was born two centuries ago this year. MVM pays tribute to him with the Fairy Tales op. 113 for viola and piano, and his Quintet in E-flat major op. 44 for piano and strings, one of the best-loved pieces of chamber music ever.

Also on the musical menu will be the Trio for violin, cello and piano op. 17, a romantic masterpiece by Robert’s wife Clara, a brilliant pianist and composer, and mother of their eight children. All this music is full of tunes that one will quickly remember, and you may be singing or whistling these pieces for a while.

Performers are special guest Ania Bard, violin and MVM’s own Steven Harlos, piano; Mark Miller, violin; Ute Miller, viola; Carol Harlos.

Tickets are $10 for MVM members, $15 for non-members. Students are admitted free. (Students 8th grade and younger must be accompanied by an adult ticketholder.) Memberships in MVM start at $25 and are good for the entire season from June 1 through May 31.

True Blue Christmas to perform Sunday, Dec. 5 at the Winnsboro Center for the Arts

Anita Williams - Sunday, November 21, 2010

There's nothing like a little nostalgia to get you in the mood for Christmas. True Blue will be returning to the stage of Winnsboro Center for the Arts to ring in the Christmas season with "True Blue Christmas."

The group includes Shannon Monk on vocals, George Gagliardi on piano and guitar, Rick Murray on drums, and Ben Scarborough on bass.

The evening is designed to bring to mind the television Christmas Specials of the late 60s and early 70s, complete with special guests and a sketch or two. Join us as we celebrate the most wonder-filled time of the year!

The performance will be on Sunday, December 5 at 7 pm at the Winnsboro Center for the Arts.

Ticket prices this year are $15 for adults, $7.50 for children 13 and under, and a family friendly $45 ticket for the whole household. One third of the ticket price goes directly to benefit the Winnsboro Center for the Arts, as well as funds raised through the sale of concessions.

Adler & Hearne perform at The Monastery, Sunday, Sept. 26, 2010

Anita Williams - Monday, September 20, 2010
Before Crossroads. . . before our downtown restaurants were hosting music on a regular basis. . . we enjoyed our music the old fashioned way. House concerts at Michael and Shannon Monk's home.

For one special night - next Sunday, Sept. 26 - we'll be there once again for a potluck dinner and concert by none other than our own Lynn Adler and Lindy Hearne, now back from their summer tour around the country.

So whip up a covered dish or salad to share, and a bottle of wine if you like, and come on down and revisit the place and people that really put a lot of energy behind getting Winnsboro on the map as a destination for music.

I can tell you from personal experience, there is nothing like a house concert for camaraderie and an up-close-and-personal rapport with the artists.

Maybe it's because the Monastery is out in the woods, but during concerts there, I often experienced a glimmer of the time when transient musicians traveled these back roads over a century ago, sharing their music and stories.

I'd look through the windows into the trees as a guitar or mandolin played tunes echoing another time. It was easy to imagine a man on a horse riding up the dusty road, guitar slung on his back. The townsfolk, eager for a new face and a diversion, would welcome him and share meals and a place to stay for a day or two.

Just home from their 2010 tour, Lynn and Lindy surely have a kinship with those who have sung their stories up and down the countryside for generations. We, on the other hand, have a kinship with those who eagerly welcomed the travelers who would lift weary spirits and weave magical moments with their songs.

Make your reservations with Shannon by sending an email to:

musicmonastery@gmail.com

Shannon will provide directions in a return email.

Potluck dinner Sunday, Sept. 26 at 5 pm. The singin' starts at 6 pm. Tickets are $15 each or $25 for two. Space is limited, so make your reservation ASAP.

Singing in the summer of 2010

Anita Williams - Sunday, May 23, 2010
I was just working on the calendar and realized we have some truly great performances coming up in the next few weeks that are in addition to the day-long Northeast Texas Music Festival

First, on May 29, Stan Narramore will be performing classic rock at Art & Espresso from 7 - 9 pm.  You'll be just in time to get one of Marilyn's famous desserts, Blue Bell ice cream and her May specials made with strawberries.

Then on June 5, Ronny Cox returns to the stage at Crossroads - now at the Winnsboro Center for the Arts - with his signature laid-back style, songs and story-telling.  He may be a star of television and film - frequently playing the villain - but onstage he's just himself.  Engaging, personable and a first-class performer.
