Adler & Hearne perform at The Monastery, Sunday, Sept. 26, 2010

Anita Williams - Monday, September 20, 2010
Before Crossroads. . . before our downtown restaurants were hosting music on a regular basis. . . we enjoyed our music the old fashioned way. House concerts at Michael and Shannon Monk's home.

For one special night - next Sunday, Sept. 26 - we'll be there once again for a potluck dinner and concert by none other than our own Lynn Adler and Lindy Hearne, now back from their summer tour around the country.

So whip up a covered dish or salad to share, and a bottle of wine if you like, and come on down and revisit the place and people that really put a lot of energy behind getting Winnsboro on the map as a destination for music.

I can tell you from personal experience, there is nothing like a house concert for camaraderie and an up-close-and-personal rapport with the artists.

Maybe it's because the Monastery is out in the woods, but during concerts there, I often experienced a glimmer of the time when transient musicians traveled these back roads over a century ago, sharing their music and stories.

I'd look through the windows into the trees as a guitar or mandolin played tunes echoing another time. It was easy to imagine a man on a horse riding up the dusty road, guitar slung on his back. The townsfolk, eager for a new face and a diversion, would welcome him and share meals and a place to stay for a day or two.

Just home from their 2010 tour, Lynn and Lindy surely have a kinship with those who have sung their stories up and down the countryside for generations. We, on the other hand, have a kinship with those who eagerly welcomed the travelers who would lift weary spirits and weave magical moments with their songs.

Make your reservations with Shannon by sending an email to:

musicmonastery@gmail.com

Shannon will provide directions in a return email.

Potluck dinner Sunday, Sept. 26 at 5 pm. The singin' starts at 6 pm. Tickets are $15 each or $25 for two. Space is limited, so make your reservation ASAP.
