The Winnsboro Farmers' Market opens this weekend, Saturday, April 6, at the Jack Cross Pavilion in City Park.

Anita Williams - Tuesday, April 02, 2013

The Winnsboro Farmers’ Market 2013 season opens Saturday April 6, 2013 and runs every Saturday, rain or shine, under the Jack Cross Pavilion in the City Park on Wheeler Drive. The market will run through November 2, 2013; returning to Market Street downtown from Oct. 5 through November 2, 2013

Exciting events planned for this season include:

• May 4, Annual home-made ice cream challenge benefiting the 4H; first prize $100 cash

• May 25, Fit and fun family health day

• June 15, Iron Chef Competition; prizes including $250 cash for first place.

• June 29, Tomato Tasting Event

• July 13, Who Makes the Best Salsa Contest?

• September 21, Gourmet Farm Dinner at Bella Stella Vineyards

The website has a calendar of events and details for registering as a vendor or participating in contests. www.winnsborofarmermarket.com.

Back to basics - learn to make cheese at home at Chef Nancy's cheese making class Sat., Jan. 12!

Anita Williams - Tuesday, January 01, 2013

Nancy Falster is well known as a personal chef. Among her many talents (raising miniature cattle, pigs among them) she has mastered artisanal hard cheese as well as soft cheeses from yogurt.

Her dedication to traditional foods has resulted in a dedicated group of people who flock to her classes. Little wonder - you get to eat a fresh, healthy lunch between the morning and afternoon sessions!

Nancy and her husband, Karl, are among a group of "back to basics" family farmers who sell their berries, veggies, meat, eggs and yogurt along with gardeners at the Winnsboro Farmers' Market during April through October.

It's Chef Nancy who helps her students go back to the healthy basics that were common during much of the 1900s, when family farms were far more prevalent than commercial farms. If that idea is appealing to you, or you just like to try new things, sign up for her class as fast as you can so you're sure to have a spot saved!

The cost is $80, which includes the "take home" cheese you'll make, and also lunch.

Sign up for two and get a discount.
Since lunch is included, reservations are a MUST.
